In your first year you will be expected to

  • write a literature review on the broad area of your thesis research (don't panic if this is rather ill-defined at this point, though do try to define it).

  • write a report on your progress.

  • give at least one talk to the department on a recent journal paper as part of journal club.

  • give a talk to the school on your work at the end of your first year.

See the School of Physics handbook http://newton.ex.ac.uk/handbook/.
